Reviews

This is a well worn volume and the pages are dog eared and marked up. It has all 24 scales but it also includes the enharmonic scales making a total of 30. For example G flat Major/F sharp Major have the same notes played. This way, you can practice all the way around the circle of 5ths either in Sharps order or Flats order. Each scale has proper fingering, the triads, the cadences and the arpeggios in three positions as well as the dominant 7th arpeggios in 4 positions. If this all sounds like a foreign language, be assured that when I bought this book several years ago, I had no idea what the above all meant. There is also fingering for the scales in contrary motion, in parallel thirds and sixths which will be very helpful for those wishing to take exams. Also included is fingering for chromatic scales with parallel motion in octaves, in minor thirds and tenths and major thirds and tenths. This is a book every pianist should have. There is so much in this book that I still need to learn and I will and have found this book useful for years. In the beginning there is a section of theory explaining how scales are built and what the heck is a dominant, sub dominant and root chord.I practice my scales using this book. My favorite quote from this book is attributed to Carl Czerny who wrote his own exercises for the piano: “Do you ask me how good a piano player you may become? Then tell me how much you practice the scales.”This book will help you become a better pianist.
